Finacea Gel For Rosacea: How Does it Work?

Finacea is one of the most popular over-the-counter rosacea treatments today.  Finacea gel is produced by Intendis and is the first and only gel approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of mild to moderate rosacea.

Finacea gel is effective in treating rosacea because of its active ingredient, azelaic acid.  Azelaic acid is an organic compound naturally found in rye, barley and wheat. This compound has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties which makes it effective in treating rosacea and other skin and hair conditions such acne, hair loss, melasma, and hyperpigmentation.

How Azelaic acid Treats Rosacea

  1. Azeleic acid reduces the production of excess skin cells. Excess skin cells can block the pores, trapping dirt and excess oil.  Dirt and excess oils trapped in the pores are harder to remove, even with regular skin cleansing.  And when these components stay in pores for too long, it can irritate the skin.  The blocked pores can become inflamed, causing pimples and triggering rosacea.  When the inflamed pores become infected, the pimples can worsen and turn into acne.

Azeleic acid works by reducing the amount of keratin needed to produce more skin cells. If there are fewer dead, excess, skin cells, the less likely the skin pores will get blocked.  When the skin pores are clear, it’s easier to clean the skin and remove dirt, excess oils, and bacteria.

  1. Azeleic acid reduces the production of sebum or skin oil.  You skin naturally produces oil to help keep it soft and moisturized.  But, when your skin produces too much oil or sebum, it can irritate the skin and trigger rosacea.  Too much sebum can also trigger rosacea by trapping dirt and bacteria to the skin surface.  Azaleic acid helps treat rosacea by suppressing the production of sebum which helps keeps sensitive skin clear.

  1. Azeleic acid is a natural antibiotic.  The bacterium Propionebacterium acne is a commonly found on the skin surface.  People with rosacea are very sensitive to the presence of this bacterium and the skin gets inflamed and irritated when it’s infected.  Axeleic acid has natural antibiotic properties that kills this bacterium and prevents it from growing.

The effects of Finacea gel for acne can be seen in a little as 4 weeks and could last for as long as 15 weeks.  Most doctors recommend using the gel for several months in order to achieve lasting relief from rosacea.  Finacea has been proven in several clinical studies to be just as effective as metronidazole creams for certain cases of rosacea.

Although Finacea is relatively safe, its use in children under 12 years old, pregnant women, and lactating women is not recommended.  The possible effects of Finacea on these categories of people have not been studied so it’s better to err on the side of caution.

There have been side effects associated with Finacea, but most of them are mild and manageable.  The most common side effects include burning sensation, pain, itching, redness, dryness and skin peeling on the site of application.  The less common side effects include contact dermatitis and facial swelling.

Overall, using finacea gel is an effective and convenient way to treat acne.  But, in order to get the best result for rosacea treatment make sure to consult your dermatologist before trying finacea or any other rosacea treatment.   Your dermatologist can accurately assess what treatment would work for your case of rosacea and your lifestyle.
