Skincare For Rosacea: As Easy As 1-2-3

Skincare for rosacea is very important for several reasons.  Most people with rosacea neglect basic skin care because they think there’s no cure for rosacea.  They think they don’t need to take care of their skin because it’s already damaged.  But, having clean and healthy skin despite having acne is just as important as the rosacea treatments themselves. Rosacea may not be curable, but it is treatable.  And basic skincare is an important part of the natural treatment for rosacea.  Keeping your skin healthy makes rosacea treatments more effective and prevents your face from being scarred for life.

The first reason why regular skincare for rosacea is important is because it can help control the severity of the break outs.  There are plenty of factors that can exacerbate rosacea or make the flare ups worse, like stress, unhealthy lifestyle, pollution and make up.  Keeping your skin clean and healthy can help keep these factors under control.

The second reason why a skin care regimen is important is because it helps make rosacea treatments more effective.  The best face creams for rosacea and rosacea laser treatments won’t work if your skin isn’t healthy.  That’s because dry skin can’t absorb the active ingredients found in rosacea creams as well as healthy skin.  And rosacea laser treatments actually do some damage to your skin while treating the acne.  Dry, unhealthy skin won’t heal as fast as health skin. This can produce scarring and other complications associated with laser treatments.  So keeping your skin clean and healthy can help your skin heal faster and better.

Last but not the least, regular skincare for rosacea can help prevent future break outs.  Most of the factors that cause rosacea can be prevented with a regular skin care regimen.  And the longer your skin stays healthy; it actually becomes more resistant to rosacea.  This means that if you do get acne again, it would be less severe and easier to manage.

Skincare for rosacea doesn’t have to be complicated.  In fact, it’s as easy as 1-2-3!  But before putting anything on your face, make sure to do a spot test first on your forearm. Having rosacea makes your skin extra sensitive, so it’s important to check whether the product you’ll be using is safe. To do a spot check, place a small dab of skin care product on your arm and leave it there for 24 hours. Cleansing.   When you have rosacea, it’s important to keep your skin clean because dirt can make the break outs worse.  But you can just use any soap or facial cleanser.  Regular soaps can dry your skin and some facial cleansers have ingredients that can make your acne worse.  Look for all-natural cleansers that are hypoallergenic and non-drying.  Make sure to wash your face regularly, especially before going to bed and after being exposed to dirt and perspiration.  And if you are undergoing rosacea treatment, make sure to ask your dermatologist what cleansers you can use that wouldn’t affect your treatment.

  2. Toning.  Toners help the skin in 4 ways: 1) it removes any facial cleanser left behind, making your skin cleaner; 2) it closes the pores, which helps control the inflammation; 3) it helps your skin absorb moisture better and 4) it has mild astringent properties to help prevent infections, which is common for people with rosacea. The problem with most toners is they can dry the skin because of the alcohol and most people tend to rub toners too vigorously on their face.  Look for mild toners that have moisturizers and no alcohol.  Or go for natural toners like tea-tree oil and witch hazel.  And when using toner, just let the cotton ball run gently against your skin.  One pass is often enough for your skin to get all the benefits.

  3. Moisturize.  When choosing a moisturizer for rosacea, make sure to read the ingredient list carefully.  A lot of moisturizers have ingredients that can aggravate acne.  Look for mild moisturizers that are hypoallergenic, all natural and organic.  Or you can also ask your dermatologist on what rosacea cream can help moisturize your skin and support your treatment.

Plus 1!  One of the major causes of rosacea is prolonged sun exposure.  In addition to aggravating rosacea, too much sun can dry your skin and cause premature aging.  Putting on sunscreen is just as important as the 3 basic steps.  Ask your dermatologist on what sunscreen products you can use that wouldn’t cause breakouts and affect your rosacea treatment.
